Cobham College began as a chantry founded in 1362 for five priests, was partly rebuilt in 1598, and is almshouses to this day. St Mary Magdalene's chancel is thirteenth-century, older than the college; the church was rebuilt around it soon after 1362, taking a west tower and new aisle walls. The brasses in its pavement, from the 1290s to 1529, are commonly reckoned the finest series anywhere. Up in Cobham Woods stands the Darnley Mausoleum, a Grade I pyramid begun in 1786 to a James Wyatt design and handed to the National Trust in 2013. The Leather Bottle dates from 1629 and turns up in The Pickwick Papers.
Village core listed, school on the edge
The village has been a conservation area since 1970, so the core is period stock with the kitchens that tend to come with it: solid-fuel or range cookers in the older houses, tighter fitted galleys in the cottages along The Street. Cobham Hall School sits on the estate, teaching 11 to 19 and part of the Mill Hill School Foundation since February 2021. A microwave done at the same visit is £22.
