Claygate station was built in 1885, and it pulled the life of the village away from The Green. The Parade, put up as shops with accommodation above them, leads to the station.

Elmbridge's design guide describes The Parade as a purpose-built run of shops and services with accommodation over them, two and three storeys high, with bays, gables and corner turrets and much of its original detail intact. The old village centre round The Green holds community buildings such as the church, the village hall and the school. It has been a conservation area since 28 November 1990, and Holy Trinity Church there is listed Grade II.

The Foley Estate's Arts and Crafts houses
In 1885, the same year as the station, the Hon Fitzalan Foley divided his land into 258 plots and began cutting roads through it; by the end of the century many plots had been sold for housing. The council's guide describes the streets around Foley Road, with Claremont Road and Beaconsfield Road among them, as generally very large detached houses on wide, deep plots, many with strong Arts and Crafts influences in red brick, timber framing and clay tiles. Part of the estate became a conservation area on 23 November 1994.
Elsewhere the mix changes. The guide notes small groups of older workers' cottages round the village core and on Coverts Road, and its record of the community workshop picks out the bungalows of Glenavon Close as a type rarely seen elsewhere in the borough.
Claygate ward had 2,806 households at the 2021 Census. 44.7% of them lived in a detached house, and 41.4% owned their home outright, with no mortgage left.

Parking near Claygate station
Elmbridge runs two car parks on Hare Lane: Torrington Lodge, close to The Parade and the station, with 90 spaces, and a smaller one by the village hall with 43. Both charge from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. On the roads, Surrey County Council sets the rules. In February 2026 it approved a new restriction on part of The Avenue, no waiting from 10am to 11am on weekdays, to stop all-day parking there, and judged the road unsuited to permits because so many of its houses have their own off-street parking. If the van can use your drive, say so when you book.
