Claygate is the only civil parish in the borough of Elmbridge. The name comes from the clay pits that used to be here, which supplied bricks over a wide area, most of Hampton Court Palace among them. Holy Trinity was consecrated in 1840 and the parish followed a year after.
The station built a second village
Claygate got its station in 1885 on the New Guildford Line, and rather than growing outward from the old centre the place effectively started again half a mile away, a new village laid out around the station and its goods yard, with most of the development that matters happening in the sixty years after the track went down. The Hon Fitzalan Foley organised it. Lord Foley sold the plots: Foley Road, Claremont Road, Beaconsfield Road, Gordon Road. Commuters bought them.
The Foley Estate is a conservation area
Elmbridge lists the brick pavements on Foley Road, between Hare Lane and the recreation ground, as a local heritage asset, and the Foley Arms on Hare Lane, a late nineteenth-century building, sits on the same list. Ruxley Towers, the Neo-Gothic pile Lord Foley put up, served as NAAFI headquarters through the Second World War and holds flats now. The Parade is the larger of the two shopping areas, running from the station into Hare Lane.
