The first firm reference to Clay Hill is as Cleyein, in a document of 1214, and despite the name the council's appraisal says the local geology is alluvium rather than clay.
Two old inns and a Victorian terrace on Clay Hill
Enfield made Clay Hill a conservation area in 1983 and extended it in 2008 to take in Hilly Fields. The council's appraisal dates the Rose and Crown, in the hollow where the lane crosses the Turkey Brook, to the 16th century and the Fallow Buck to the 17th; both were roadside inns by the mid 1700s. The Fallow Buck is now a private house, and William Crew, who gave his name to Crews Hill, kept it as landlord for nearly ten years from 1765.
The lane itself is lined with high walls and hedges, with one narrow pavement on the south side, and many of the bigger houses stand at the end of private drives. The closer-packed houses are at the east end. St John's Terrace is two short rows of small late Victorian houses built between 1867 and 1896, partly facing an unmade side road. At the far west, the fourteen brick arches of the Rendlesham viaduct carry the Hertford Loop over the brook, and near St John's Church there is a mobile home park; the census area round Strayfield Road and Theobalds Park Road counted 20 households in caravans or mobile homes in 2021.
The 1930s semis south of the lane
Suburban building reached Clay Hill between the wars, with the Park Nook estate of 1930s semi-detached houses along the south side of the road. Hilly Fields had already been carved out of Park Farm in 1909, when the council bought 62 acres partly to stop houses spreading further north.
The numbers bear this out. In the statistical area covering the east end of Clay Hill and the streets south of it (Park Nook Gardens, Browning Road, Morley Hill and the streets off Phipps Hatch Lane), 350 of the 630 homes on the council tax list in March 2025 were built between 1930 and 1939. At the 2021 Census it had 611 households: 67.1% lived in a semi-detached house and 84.2% owned their home.
A 1930s semi may have had its kitchen extended at the back and refitted since, so the oven can be anything from a built-in single to a built-in double or a 90cm range.

Getting the van to a Clay Hill house
Enfield Council's zone map, as archived in December 2022, shows no controlled parking zone on Clay Hill or the Park Nook streets; check the signs if anything has changed. On the lane itself, with its walls, hedges and single pavement, a drive is the best place for the van. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets.
