Clapton Pond lies about halfway between the old villages of Lower and Upper Clapton, which were strung out along Clapton Lane; the name is Old English for a farm on a hill.
The houses round Clapton Pond
The oldest buildings face the pond from the east. Bishop Wood's Almshouses were paid for under the will of Thomas Wood, Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry, who died in 1690, and beside them stands Pond House, a late Georgian villa listed grade II*. Most of the rest came later. Hackney's 2004 appraisal of the Clapton Pond conservation area says the whole area was gradually built over between 1850 and 1890, with the biggest push after 1875, which it ties to the new station at Clapton in 1872. Mildenhall Road was cut through the older St James' Terrace in the 1870s, and Thistlewaite Road was built over the garden of Clapton House, which was pulled down in the 1880s. North of the almshouses, Nos. 164-188 Lower Clapton Road are a late Victorian terrace with basements and raised ground floors.
The west side changed more. In the 1930s the council pulled down Byland House and its neighbours for the Powell House estate; the appraisal says the estate's buildings were considered unfit by the 1980s, when the present blocks of flats facing the west side of the pond were built. On Lower Clapton Road and Downs Road it finds homes largely confined to flats over ground-floor shops, in buildings of three or four storeys.
A flat over a shop is often reached by a side door and a stair, and a small kitchen at the back may hold a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker. Racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.

Its east side and the streets up to Clapton station are in Lea Bridge ward, Hackney's ward of that name (Waltham Forest has another across the river); the Downs Road side is in Hackney Downs ward. Parking by Clapton Pond: zones N, U and S
On Hackney's zone map the pond sits on a corner where three zones touch. The pond itself and the streets to its east, towards Millfields Road, are zone N (Homerton and Lower Clapton), controlled from 7.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays. Just north, towards Lea Bridge Road and Clapton station, is zone U (Upper Clapton), and the Downs Road side is zone S (Hackney North); the council's zone list gives both of those as 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Sundays fall outside the usual hours of all three, though the council lists extra weekend hours for zone N on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park event days. The team needs somewhere to park, and the plate on the bay decides.
