St Paul's Church on Rectory Grove stands where Clapham's parish church stood from the 12th century. The present building dates from 1815, put up after the village had shifted towards the Common and a new parish church, Holy Trinity, had been built there.
Clapham Manor Street, laid out in the 1820s
Lambeth's 2009 statement for the Rectory Grove conservation area traces how the old village spread east to meet the High Street, which the statement identifies as the Roman road of Stane Street. Clapham Manor Street was laid out in the 1820s to join the High Street to Larkhall Rise, and was then plain Manor Street; most of its buildings date from between 1837 and 1855, with Thomas Cubitt, it seems, more an overseer than a developer. Clapham Manor itself, an Elizabethan house, was pulled down in 1837, and Turret Grove was laid out over its site, with the houses inside the conservation area built in 1844-5.
The same statement notes that some houses on Clapham Manor Street, Rectory Grove and Larkhall Rise have gone back to being single family homes after years as flats, while, at the time, more modest houses nearby were still being split up. Those two paths lead to different kitchens. A whole house refitted for a family is the likeliest place for a double oven or a range cooker; a flat on one floor of the same terrace usually has a built-in single.

The Clapham Manor Estate
Not every old street survived. In the 1960s and 1970s the small enclave of Wirtemburg Street, Chip Street, Cross Street, Little Manor Street, Bromells Buildings and Prescott Place was cleared, and the Clapham Manor Estate went up in its place.
