On the Ordnance Survey map of 1870, Clapham High Street has grand terraced houses set back behind large front gardens, and the only commercial buildings seem to run from Clapham Cross, where Clapham Common station now stands, to around the junction with Clapham Manor Street.
Houses that became shops
Lambeth's 2009 statement for the Clapham High Street conservation area tells what happened next. As workers arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the big houses were split up, extended or pulled down, and by 1900 the commercial core had begun to spread east along the street, mainly on the north side. Many of the older houses were given single-storey shopfronts, and new Edwardian commercial buildings went up, often in red brick. Two earlier groups survive: Nos. 24-36, grand former houses in stucco with shops added at ground floor, and Nos. 101-109, a run of smaller cottage-type premises.
The same statement describes the street as mainly shops and restaurants along the frontage, with flats or storage on the upper floors. A flat over a shop tends to have a compact kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker, often reached by a side door and a narrow stair.
Blocks of flats on the south side
Off the main road the housing changes quickly. The census area on the south side of the street, running east from Clapham Common station past Nelson's Row (Lambeth 017C), had 677 households in 2021. 83.6% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 52.3% rented from the council or a housing association; only 27.9% rented privately. Next to it, in the census area round The Pavement and Venn Street (Lambeth 013C), the balance flips: 47.6% rented privately and 10.3% from a social landlord. Either way, the method is the same. Dust sheets go down, the cavity, fan cover and inside of the door glass are degreased by hand, and the door is split where its design allows.

The price depends on the appliance, a single, a double, a 90cm range and so on, and is fixed on the phone before anyone comes out. A Sunday visit costs what a Tuesday one does.
Loading rules on a busy main road
Lambeth's statement calls the High Street one of the main routes into central London from the south, used heavily by local and city-wide traffic, while the side streets are mostly under traffic restrictions. A loading bay is no use for an oven clean: in Lambeth, loading bays, including those on red routes, have a maximum stay of 20 minutes, and a civil enforcement officer watches for five minutes to see that loading is going on. A single oven takes about 90 minutes, so the van needs a proper bay near your door; tell us the nearest side street when you call.
