Chipping Ongar was laid out in the 12th century as a market town beside the Norman castle, and more than 70 listed buildings now line its High Street. Since 1965 it has been part of Ongar parish, together with Shelley, Greensted and Marden Ash; the parish had 7,138 residents at the 2021 Census.
Ongar's High Street, Shelley and Marden Ash
The High Street was one of the first conservation areas Essex County Council designated. On its west side the old building plots run a long way back, and the yards behind the shops are mostly used for parking and servicing; on the east side the plots are short, hemmed in by the castle's inner bailey. Castle Street, by St Martin's Church, is tightly enclosed by terraced houses. The town had almost a thousand people by 1900, and the district council's conservation leaflet records that much of the building from the interwar years onwards went to Shelley and Marden Ash, outside the old town.
The 2021 Census shows what that later building looks like. In the Chipping Ongar, Greensted and Marden Ash ward, 43.8% of households lived in a semi-detached house and 26.9% in a detached one, and 78.9% owned their home. Shelley ward, to the north, had more social housing: 31.4% of households rented from the council or a housing association.
Great Stony Park is another kind of Ongar home. Hackney Council built it as Hackney Cottage Homes, finished in 1905, as a safe home for deprived children; it became Great Stony School, and in 1997 Hackney sold the whole estate to Taywood Homes, which redeveloped the school buildings as private homes. The estate now has 61 homes and is a conservation area in its own right. A converted school, an old High Street building and a semi in Marden Ash will all have different kitchens. Parking in Ongar: The Pleasance and Bansons Lane
The district council runs three car parks in Ongar: Bansons Lane, the Sainsbury's car park off Bansons Lane, and The Pleasance. The Pleasance is the long-stay one, on the site of a building behind the old Cock public house that the local authority bought and pulled down in the 1950s to make a car park. The tariff set from 4 August 2025 runs Monday to Sunday, with no charge at weekends in December. Street restrictions come from the North Essex Parking Partnership, which in August 2025 added double yellow lines on the east side of Great Lawn to keep it clear for large vehicles.

The night before, so it is cool when we arrive. A two-oven AGA takes about half a day on site.
Do you come out to the Rodings at weekends?
Yes. We work seven days a week and a Saturday costs the same as a Wednesday. The phone lines are open 8am to 6pm at weekends.
My kitchen is a small room behind a High Street shop. Is that a problem?
No. The cavity and seals are cleaned by hand in the kitchen, and the racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. You look inside the lit oven at the end, and if a corner is not right we put it right before we leave.
