King John granted a market charter at Barnet on 23 August 1199, to the Abbot of St Albans. By the 16th century the market traded mainly in livestock, and in 1851 it moved off the street to a site off New Road and St Albans Road.

From 1860 the fields behind were laid out with plain terraced housing, and from the 1880s larger villas went up facing Ravenscroft Park, the last stretch of manorial waste left after Barnet Common was enclosed in 1815.
In the Census small area that holds Ravenscroft Park and Union Street (Barnet 001A) there were 716 households in 2021: 37.7% in a terrace, 22.5% in a semi, 17.2% in a purpose-built flat and 12.2% in part of a converted or shared house. Older terraces usually have a narrow back kitchen; a villa split into flats tends to give each flat a small kitchen, often with a built-in single.

The council's appraisal says the main pockets of town-centre homes are in the side streets of Tapster Street, Moxon Street and Victors Way, mostly in modern purpose-built flats such as Chris Court in Tapster Street. Upper floors above the shops are used as offices or flats. Wherever the kitchen is, racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
