Chipperfield Common, more than 100 acres of mostly secondary woodland on the south side of the village, was given to the local authority by the Blackwell family in 1936, to be looked after in consultation with the village. The parish council describes a village just under 2 miles across, at a crossroads on the edge of the Chilterns, with fields running right up to the houses. The newest homes have replaced businesses: the parish council notes that a garden centre and a car dealership have both gone to housing, and a 2019 application for the Land Rover dealership site proposed nine homes, six with three bedrooms and three with four.
Mostly detached houses round the centre
At the 2021 Census the statistical area that covers the village centre (Dacorum 021C) had about 645 households. More of them lived in a detached house (43.8%) than in a semi (26.6%) or a terrace (18.0%), and 79.7% owned their home. A big detached kitchen is a likelier place to find a range cooker, and a Chipperfield range gets the same treatment as a single oven, only with more parts.

Parking in the centre at weekends
The parish council notes that visitors to the common add to congestion and parking pressure in the centre, particularly at weekends. Tell us whether the house has a drive, and read the signs if the van has to stop on the road. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
