In the late 18th century Chingford's parish church stood on its own on a commanding site at Chingford Mount, about a mile from each of the parish's three small villages.
Shops at the Chingford Mount crossroads
Today the name covers the shops where Chingford Mount Road, Old Church Road, Hall Lane and New Road meet, and the hill that climbs north from there towards the old church. A cemetery opened north of the shops in 1884, opposite the old church, and there had been further building at the Mount by 1914; many of the buildings around the crossroads date from the 1930s. On 9 September 1935 an Odeon by Andrew Mather opened in Cherrydown Avenue, just off the crossroads, faced in cream-grey terracotta; it shut in June 1972 and a supermarket and offices went up in its place. St Edmund's on Larkswood Road, a short walk south of the crossroads, came in 1938: grey brick and knapped flint by N. F. Cachemaille-Day, listed Grade II in 1987.
Flats above the Chingford Mount shops
The census area the House of Commons Library names Chingford Mount (Waltham Forest 005) had about 3,200 households in 2021. Of those, 39.1% lived in a terraced house, 31.5% in a semi and 19.4% in a purpose-built block of flats. Another 93 households lived in a commercial building, the census heading that takes in flats over shops. About two in three (67.5%) owned their home and 19.7% rented privately.
A flat over a shop is usually reached by a staircase from a side or back door, and the kitchen tends to be small. That only changes the carrying. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, after dust sheets go down.

Parking for the van at Chingford Mount
Chingford Mount Road is also a ward boundary: the west side is in Valley ward and the east side in Larkswood. Just off Royston Parade, Royston Avenue and Broad Oak Close form the council's Royston Avenue (RA) zone, with core hours of 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, on its March 2026 zone map; the signs in the street give the times that apply. On Hall Lane, just west of the crossroads, the council's car park opens 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday, with charges listed for stays of up to three hours.
Elsewhere, read the signs at the end of your road. Some Waltham Forest streets have a "permit holders only past this point" sign at the turning and no bay markings after it, which the council's parking zone page explains. The team needs somewhere to park.

How long is the oven out of action?
About 90 minutes for a single and about 2 hours for a double; a 90cm range takes 2 to 3 hours. Turn it off well before we arrive, because it has to be cool.
Can the hob be cleaned on the same visit?

Is a Saturday visit dearer?
No, weekends cost the same as weekdays. If you live in Royston Avenue, remember that the zone's core hours include Saturdays.
