Trains first reached Chingford in 1873, at a terminus in Bull Lane (now Kings Road), and the present station opened a little further north in 1878.
The villa streets east of Chingford station
Land near the new station soon went for building. In 1884 a company tied to Jabez Balfour's Liberator Building Society bought the Chingford Rise estate, about 120 acres, and by 1897 there were 27 houses on The Drive, Forest Avenue and Crescent Road, villas with four to seven bedrooms. Forest Avenue runs up to Rangers Road and the forest edge, where Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge, finished in 1543 as Henry VIII's Great Standing, stands on the edge of Epping Forest. On 20 April 2023 the council made Station Road and the largely Victorian and Edwardian streets either side of the railway, The Drive and Forest Avenue among them, into the Chingford Station Road conservation area.
Most of the town came later. Chingford had 4,373 people in 1901, 22,053 in 1931 and 48,355 by 1951, and most of that growth happened before 1939. Houses of that age have usually had a new kitchen or two since, so the oven in an E4 semi can be anything from a slim built-in single to a 90cm range.

Parking in the North Chingford zone
South-west of the station, Cart Lane, Connaught Road, Cross Road, Garfield Road, Queen's Grove Road, Springfield Road and Stanley Road were the streets of the North Chingford controlled parking zone when it began as a trial in 2013. The council made it permanent in 2014, with permit hours of 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, and the signs on the street show the hours in force now. The van has to stay parked for the whole visit, so inside those hours it needs a visitor permit from you.
Some streets in the borough have a sign at the turning that reads "permit holders only past this point", with no bay markings after it. The council's parking zone page explains those signs. The signs on your own street are the rule on the day.

A 90cm range is £143 and a 100cm range is £167. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the 90cm size; the hob or hood of the range can be added for £48.
What is cleaned in the kitchen and what comes out?
After dust sheets go down, the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The oven is then put back together and heated, and you look inside before we pack up.
Does the oven need to be off before you arrive?
Yes, cool on arrival, so switch it off after the last meal. We also need a working socket near the cooker.
