Gerrard Street stands on the old Military Ground, named after the Military Company, a band of Westminster volunteer soldiers founded in 1615 who drilled there. The earliest known building lease on the street was granted by Nicholas Barbon in 1678. The first Chinese communities settled round Gerrard Street in the 1950s, drawn by cheap rents and short leases; as their restaurants did well, the area came to be called Chinatown.
Homes in Chinatown: few, and mostly in one block
Westminster's conservation area audit says the main concentration of homes in Chinatown is a block of flats built in the 1980s. In the 2021 Census, the output area round Newport Court and Newport Place had 113 households: 101 of them lived in a purpose-built block, and 56% rented from the council.
That corner has housed people before. Newport Dwellings, in Newport Place, were finished in 1883 to house 1,100 people, as part of the rehousing for those displaced by Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Avenue. Several blocks were destroyed by bombing in the Second World War, and by the 1960s their site was a car park.
The other homes are upper floors. In the output area covering most of Gerrard Street and Lisle Street, 38 of 165 households lived in what the census calls a commercial building, which includes a flat over a shop. Kitchens in flats like these are usually small, with a built-in single oven.
Whichever it is, the method is the same. Shelves, runners, trays and the fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the inside of the oven and the door glass are cleaned by hand over dust sheets.

Pedestrian streets and parking round Gerrard Street
Chinatown is laid out round the pedestrian areas of Gerrard Street and Newport Court, so the van stops on a street it is allowed on. The whole area is in Westminster's parking zone G. In the council's table of hours from March 2026, paid bays and single yellow lines there are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and resident bays at all times. Westminster has no on-street visitor permit scheme: visitors use the pay-to-park bays or, outside controlled hours, single yellow lines.

A little. The street is pedestrian, so the team stops nearby and walks the rest. It takes a little longer; mention the floor when you call.
Do you come out on Sundays?
Yes, seven days a week, and Sunday is charged at the weekday price. The zone G paid bays are not controlled on a Sunday.
Can the hob be cleaned at the same time?
Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic one £23, added to the oven price.
