The kitchens here are all one floor up
Gerrard Street and part of Macclesfield Street are paved over, with vehicle access cut back to a loading window that runs roughly 07:00 to 11:00. At street level it is restaurants, bakeries and supermarkets, and none of that is our work. Ours is upstairs. The flats sit over the shopfronts on Gerrard Street, Lisle Street and the bottom end of Wardour Street, plus Vale Royal House on Newport Court, the 1980s Westminster council block with the China Town car park underneath it. Small kitchens, mostly. Often a galley with a single built-under oven wedged beside the sink.
Restaurant air makes the hoods worse than the ovens
A flat sitting above a kitchen extract, with its own windows open onto a street that fries all day, collects a film on everything, which is why the hoods in the Lisle Street flats are often in worse shape than the oven underneath them. Filters and hood at £28. The racks, shelves and side runners come out and soak in the heated tank in the van, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products.

The van does not reach the front door
Nothing about this pocket is built for a service vehicle. The dip tank makes the van tall, so underground car parks are out, including the one under Vale Royal House. That leaves a loading bay on Shaftesbury Avenue, and a walk in past the Wardour Street gate, the Qing-dynasty-style one finished in 2016 and the largest of its kind in the country. Racks get carried. This is inside the Congestion Charge zone at £18 a day since 2 January 2026, and we cover that.
Turnover, not family homes
This is West End ward and the flats change hands quickly, so much of what we get called to is a checkout clean with an agent chasing an inventory. A single oven takes about ninety minutes. Heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
Can you work around the Gerrard Street loading hours?
We do not need to be on Gerrard Street. Only the removable parts travel, so a bay on Shaftesbury Avenue works fine for a flat on the pedestrianised stretch.
Do you clean commercial restaurant ovens down here?
No. We are a domestic service, so it is the flats above rather than the kitchens below.
Is the price different in W1?
No. A single oven is £77 in Chinatown the same as anywhere, quoted on the phone, with no premium-area surcharge and no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
