Chigwell Row Wood, a piece of the old Hainault Forest on the west side of Romford Road, has been managed as a charitable trust since 1950: first by Chigwell Urban District Council and, from 1974, by Epping Forest District Council. It became a Local Nature Reserve in 2000.
A roadside hamlet on the forest edge
The Victoria County History calls Chigwell Row "a roadside hamlet on the edge of Hainault Forest", a mile south of Chigwell village. The county history lists houses at Chigwell Row known to have existed in the 15th century, among them Sheepcotes, near the Lambourne boundary, Whitehall, Old Bennetts, Hatchmans and Pearsmiths.
The forest is still on the doorstep. Hainault Forest Country Park is jointly owned by Essex County Council and the London Borough of Redbridge. In 1998 the Woodland Trust took a 50-year lease on Essex's 113 hectares, and Redbridge owns and manages the other 100. In 2006 the Trust also bought 54 hectares of former arable land beside and within the forest. Its two free car parks are off Lambourne Road and Manor Road.
