The High Road conservation area
Epping Forest District Council's conservation area leaflet of 1997 counts four Grade II* buildings in the old village: St Mary's Church, the King's Head, Chigwell School and Grange Court. The King's Head dates from the 1620s, and Dickens used it as "The Maypole" in Barnaby Rudge.
The leaflet also describes two kinds of frontage. North of the school, the houses and cottages are domestic in scale and stand close to the road. North of the Vicarage Lane junction the buildings sit back in larger gardens. The North Essex Parking Partnership's notice of making, dated 20 June 2024, covers double red lines (No Stopping At Any Time) at the junction of Forest Avenue and the High Road, in operation from 5 August 2024.
