Chesham station opened in July 1889 as the new end of the Metropolitan Railway. Three years later the line was carried on from Chalfont to Amersham and Aylesbury, which left Chesham at the end of a four-mile branch, and measured from Charing Cross no station on the Underground is further from central London. Historic England listed the station at Grade II in 2011, together with its water tower and signal box.

Council houses and private estates in Chesham

After the railway arrived, houses went up along Berkhamsted Road and the steep valley sides, according to the Chesham Historic Town Assessment. Local builders such as Jesse Mead bought land in Newtown, along Berkhampstead Road, Cameron Road and Eskdale Avenue; villa-style homes, terraces, semis and detached houses were built for the town's growing middle class. The council's first homes were 12 workmen's cottages in Brockhurst Road in 1914. In 1927 it took on 42 acres of hillside at Pond Park and made plans for another 150 homes; a further 54 houses went up there around 1932 and a further 100 by 1935, according to Chesham Museum. The museum also records 35 prefabs on redundant allotments at Chessmount Rise, and the Historic Town Assessment says speculative developers built the Chessmount and Hilltop estates in the 1950s and 1960s.

These figures are for the Chesham ward of the 2021 Census, which covered the north side of the town from Pond Park across to Hilltop; the town centre and the streets to the west were in other wards. Of its 4,131 households, 38.3% lived in a semi-detached house, 24.1% in a terrace and 20.4% in a detached house, with 13.3% in purpose-built flats. Almost one in five (19.8%) rented from a social landlord: 16.4% from housing associations and similar landlords and 3.4% from the council.

1930s semi kitchen with a freestanding cooker

Kitchens in houses of the 1920s and 1930s were usually small and have often been refitted since, so the cooker in one could be anything from an old freestanding model to a built-in double at eye level. The work is the same either way. Dust sheets go on the floor, the shelves, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. Where the door can be split, it is.

Freestanding, slot-in or built-in?

Freestanding cooker
oven and hob in one unit on its own feet, finished on the sides so it can stand anywhere
Slot-in cooker
also oven and hob in one, but made to sit flush in a gap between kitchen units
Built-in oven
an oven alone, fitted into the units: a single under the worktop, or a double in a tall housing

Tell us which one you have, and how many cavities, when you ring. If it is 90cm wide or more it is a range cooker, and our range oven cleaning page explains what that visit covers.

Permit streets and car parks in Chesham

A Buckinghamshire Council permit schedule, published with a parking consultation in September 2024, lists four resident permit zones in Chesham. CH3 is the biggest, with Bellingdon Road, Franchise Street, Gladstone Road, Victoria Road, Townsend Road and Wesley Hill among its streets. CH2 takes in Higham Road, Sunnyside Road and parts of Broad Street; CH1 is a handful of houses on Bellingdon Road; and CH4 is Germain Street. The schedule lists which homes can apply for permits, though not the hours, so check the signs on your road.

The council also runs five car parks in Chesham: Albany Place, Catlings, East Street, Star Yard and Water Meadow. The team needs somewhere to park near your door. Give us the road name when you book.

Questions from Chesham

I live on Germain Street. Where will the van go?

Germain Street is in permit zone CH4. Buckinghamshire Council says a resident can buy an on-street permit for visitors, and permits are sent digitally through MiPermit, so there is no paper permit to put in the windscreen.

Do you come out on a Sunday?

Yes. We work seven days a week, and a Saturday or Sunday costs the same as a weekday.

How long does a double oven take?

About two hours, and the price is £110. A single takes about 90 minutes.

Can the hob be done at the same visit?

Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic one £23.

What customers tell us

Brilliant clean, my oven looks like brand new. A 5 star clean.

ClaraSW15

Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.

PaulW5

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
