Chertsey Bridge was built between 1783 and 1785 to a design by James Paine, and its listing describes it as the least altered of his Thames bridges. Between Chertsey and Shepperton lies Dumsey Meadow: 9.6 hectares of water meadow, a Site of Special Scientific Interest grazed by ponies and cattle, with no houses on it at all.
Old Chertsey: Windsor Street and Guildford Street
The town centre is a conservation area of narrow fronts set hard against the pavement. On Windsor Street, Curfew House carries the date 1725 on its keystone and is slightly higher than the rest of a Grade II* listed group of five three-storey red-brick houses. Guildford Street is the main shopping street.
Around the centre the census picture is of small houses and flats. In Chertsey St Ann's ward 31.7% of households lived in a terraced house in 2021, about double the Runnymede share of 15.4%, and 21.1% rented from the council or a housing association. In Chertsey Riverside ward, along the Thames, 39.7% lived in a purpose-built block of flats; the Bridge Wharf estate is the main riverside development. In a terrace the kitchen is usually narrow and at the back, so the oven is stripped where it stands.
New homes at Longcross, and the pyrolytic oven
Runnymede's Local Plan provides for about 7,500 new homes across the borough, and 1,700 of them are planned for a garden village at Longcross, beside its station. Just over half of the households in New Haw lived in a semi-detached house (51.5%). Height limits in Chertsey's car parks
Two of Runnymede Borough Council's Chertsey car parks have low maximum heights. Gogmore Farm Park on Curfew Bell Road has 53 spaces and a 2.03m limit, and up to two hours costs £1.35. Beomonds on Heriot Road has 55 spaces and a 2.18m limit, at £2.80 for up to two hours. Neither allows a return within two hours. A high-roofed van will not fit under limits that low, so plan on a space in your street or on your drive.

Runnymede stopped handling on-street enforcement, residents' permits and visitor permits on 1 April 2023, and the restrictions from the county's Runnymede parking review 2025 became enforceable on 27 April 2026. If your road is permit-only, say so when you book.
