Chenies Manor House, the semi-fortified brick house of about 1460, stands beside St Michael's church at the top of the village, and the church still holds the Russell family's private Bedford Chapel. A village the Dukes of Bedford built
The Russell family, Earls and later Dukes of Bedford, held Chenies from 1526 and kept the Bedford Chapel on St Michael's church as their private mausoleum, and when the estate finally went to auction in 1954 to settle death duties it ran to 1,676 acres of farms, cottages and watercress beds. Along the wide verge known as the Green Sward runs a line of period estate cottages, the Bedford Arms of 1860 and the Red Lion. Behind those brick and flint walls the kitchens are old, so we protect the worktop and lift the racks out to the van.
Where the soaking happens
Shelves, trays and side runners come out and go into the heated dip-tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased indoors by hand with non-caustic products, which leaves no chemical smell in a low-ceilinged cottage room. The oven is heat-tested before we sign it off. A stone-floored kitchen in a listed cottage stays clean while we work.
Range cookers and AGAs out here
The stock in these Chilterns cottages leans towards range cookers and the odd solid-fuel stove rather than the flush integrated ovens of a new-build flat. If you run an AGA in one of the estate cottages, that is a two-oven price of £143. We quote the figure on the phone before we come. Chenies is outside Greater London, so there is no premium-area surcharge on the visit.
