Chenies Manor House, listed Grade I, has a west range of the 15th century and a south range of about 1530, and its Historic England list entry calls it an important example of the early use of brick in the county.
Chenies, a Bedford estate village
The Russell family, Earls and then Dukes of Bedford, owned the manor and the village for about four hundred years from the 16th century. Many of its houses went up between 1828 and 1870. Lord Wriothesley Russell, a younger son of the 6th Duke, became rector in 1829 and put up cottages in the red brick and slate of the Bedford estate; Field Cottage on Latimer Road carries a date stone of 1845, according to Buckinghamshire's local heritage list. Nos 37, 38 and 39 Chenies Village followed in 1850, built for the Bedford Estate in red brick with grey headers and diagonal chimneys, and are listed Grade II. In June 1954, after the death of the 12th Duke, the whole village was sold at auction to pay death duties.
The place has stayed small. Chenies parish had 276 residents at the 2021 Census, against 238 in 2001, and the village has been a conservation area since 1971, joined with Latimer's in 1992.
An estate cottage of the 1840s or 1850s was built for cooking over a fire or on a range, so whatever cooker stands in the kitchen now went in long after. In a listed cottage the floor and the units matter as much as the oven: dust sheets go down before anything is taken apart, the shelves, trays and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are cleaned by hand at the cooker. The door comes apart where its design lets it.
