The crossroads is named after a forest that has gone
Chase Cross takes its name from its position as a crossroads in the chase, meaning the hunting ground of Hainault Forest, and that forest was cleared for agriculture in the 1850s before the farmland underneath it was sold and covered with housing in the 1930s. So the ground has been arable, then suburban, inside of a century. The estate that resulted, Hillrise among the names, is the reason the kitchens here run to a pattern.
Interwar semis, and kitchens at the back of them
The stock is mostly 1930s semis and terraces, which usually means a rear kitchen, a freestanding or built-under cooker rather than an integrated column, and a hood over a separate hob. Plenty of those kitchens have been extended or refitted since. A gas cooker of that sort has the racks, shelves, trays and side runners that lift straight out and go into the heated tank in the van, and the oven in a Chase Cross Road semi starts at £77 for a single.
No station, so everything arrives by road
Chase Cross has neither an Underground nor a National Rail station, which is unusual for somewhere inside Greater London, and the nearest ones are Hainault and Newbury Park on the Central line, or Romford for the railway. The B175, Chase Cross Road, is the spine, running between Passingford Bridge and the A12. Buses 103, 375, 499 and 651 use it. We drive in and park on the street, which is what the method needs. Is RM5 far enough out that you charge extra?
No. Chase Cross is about 15 miles from Charing Cross and just under 2 miles north of Romford, and the price is the same as anywhere else we cover.
What happens to my kitchen while you work?
The removable parts soak outside in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased indoors by hand with non-caustic products, so there is no chemical smell afterwards.
Do you test the oven before you go?
Yes. It gets heat-tested and signed off. If a bulb or a seal has failed we will say so rather than leave you to find out.
