Chase Cross homes, from 1930s semis to council estates
The Victoria County History of Essex (1978) describes Romford's suburbs reaching north to Collier Row and Chase Cross. In the Collier Row ward, still largely rural until 1929, more than half the area was built up by 1939, and Green Belt legislation checked further schemes in the north shortly before the Second World War. After the war the borough council built large estates at Collier Row and, farther east, at Chase Cross and Rise Park. Two churches on Chase Cross Road show the growth: the Baptist mission started in 1936 and moved into a permanent building in 1961, and St James's was built in 1956. In 1972 the council opened a golf course on Risebridge farm, which the same history places at Chase Cross.
The council-built share still shows in the figures. In the census area the House of Commons Library calls Havering-atte-Bower and Chase Cross, 3,293 households were counted in 2021, and 17.9% of them rented from the council, close to double the Havering share of 9.3%. Another 5.1% rented from a housing association. Purpose-built flats were 22.7% of homes and semis 45.1%.
Post-war council houses and low-rise flats often have a small kitchen with a gap for a freestanding cooker, and many have since been refitted with a built-in oven. The clean is the same for both. Dust sheets go down first, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

Parking near the Chase Cross junction
Havering's schedule of pay bays and car parks lists nothing at Chase Cross itself. The nearest paid bays are in Collier Row, on Clockhouse Lane and Collier Row Road, charged 8.30am to 6.30pm with a three-hour limit and free on Sundays. Away from those bays the van parks on the street, so check the signs on your road for permit bays and tell us the street when you book.
