Since 1 April 1994 the whole east side of Chancery Lane has been in the City of London, while the west side is Westminster from Fleet Street to Carey Street and Camden from there to High Holborn. The City and London Borough Boundaries Order 1993 moved the east side's stretch from Cursitor Street down to the old Public Record Office out of Westminster, and the area south of High Holborn, Chancery House and Southampton Buildings included, out of Camden. By the order's own table, the land swapped between the City and Westminster had a population of nil.
Flats on Chancery Lane itself
Few people live here. The lane is known for law: the Law Society is at No. 113, King's College's Maughan Library fills the old Public Record Office, and Lincoln's Inn takes most of the west side above Carey Street. The homes are flats, and the government's energy certificate register lists them:
- Westminster end: 35 flats at Nos. 122-126, 14 at Nos. 116-118 and three at No. 115, plus 18 in two buildings on Bell Yard, which runs parallel to the lane on that side.
- Camden stretch: nine flats at No. 75, near the Holborn end, and five at 4 Star Yard.
- City side: five flats at No. 24 and nine at No. 68, a few doors north of the London Silver Vaults building.
The 2021 Census counted 83 people in 45 households in the seven postcodes that hold these flats.
Flats in older office and chambers buildings often have a compact kitchen along one wall with a built-in single. Westminster's 2003 conservation audit notes a variety of mansard roofs on Chancery Lane, so a top-floor flat can mean one more flight of stairs. That adds time on site, nothing more. Dust sheets go down, the racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Living inside Lincoln's Inn
Lincoln's Inn owns a substantial number of flats and lets most of them to members who have been called to the Bar. Its brick gatehouse on Chancery Lane went up between 1517 and 1521. In Old Buildings, No. 17 once held the kitchens for the Old Hall, with a great chimney of thirteen hearths that was taken out in the 1840s.
The Chancery Lane gate is for people on foot, open to the public 8am to 7pm on weekdays; vehicles use the main gatehouse at the south-east corner of Lincoln's Inn Fields. Visitors pay to park by the hour on weekdays, and on evenings, weekends and bank holidays parking inside is for residents and permit holders only, according to the Inn's visitor page. Check with the Chief Porter's office first, and give us the building and floor when you book.

Parking rules on each side of the lane

On a Saturday afternoon the City's single yellow lines are uncontrolled after 11am while Westminster's and Camden's stay controlled until 6.30pm, so the plate by each bay matters. The City consulted on changes to its on-street parking in summer 2026, so check its parking restrictions page on the day as well. On any day the team needs a legal space close to the building.

My flat is let through an agent. Can the agency book and pay?
Yes. Westminster's census output area E00190420, which takes in the lane's Westminster end, Bell Yard and Portugal Street, is dominated by 18 Portugal Street, a block of more than 200 flats; of its 109 households in 2021, 77 rented privately. The invoice can be made out to the agency, photos of the finished oven taken for the checkout file, and keys for an empty flat collected by arrangement. Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes, at the weekday price. The oven should be cool when we arrive, with a working socket nearby.
