Chalk made gun-flints. The flint-knapping trade worked here from the 17th century and turned them out in quantity until the early 19th, and the village name comes from the Saxon cealc, meaning a chalkstone. St Mary the Virgin stands some way east of the village centre, 12th century with a Norman font, and its 15th century tower served as a navigation mark for shipping on the Thames.
Riverview Park went up on a runway
Gravesend Airport opened in 1932, took RAF squadrons through the war, and closed in 1956. Dolphin Developments bought the land the following year and laid the Riverview Park estate across it. The hundredth house in Thong Lane was opened in 1958, Riverview Primary followed in 1963 and Raynehurst Primary in 1965, and the old control tower became the developer's site office. Chalk held 563 people in 1931. By 2011 the count was 2,163.
The parish was abolished in 1935
Chalk stopped being a civil parish on 1 April 1935, when it was folded into the municipal borough of Gravesend, and it has sat in Gravesham since, which is why the post comes as Gravesend and why the place reads as the eastern edge of the town rather than somewhere standing on its own. Is a fan oven priced differently?
No. A single is £77 whether it is fan or conventional. The fan cover comes off and gets degreased by hand along with the cavity.
Can a separate hob be done at the same time?
Yes, £23–28 on top, and it makes no difference whether it is built into the worktop away from the oven or sitting over it.
Do I need to be there the whole time?
Someone has to let us in, and there needs to be power for the heat test at the end. The middle of it is just the work.
Does an oven built in at eye level change anything?
Not the price. Cavity, fan cover and door glass are done in place, and the removable parts come out to the tank the same way.
