The church of St Peter and St Paul was standing before 1086, and on its west wall is the Chaldon Doom, a painting of about 1170 showing the ways of salvation and damnation and where each one ends. It follows an Eastern church scheme, the one set down in the Guide to Painting of the Greek Church and used by the monk-painters of Mount Athos. That is unusual for a Surrey parish church.
The parish held 266 people in 1901
It had held 197 in 1848. By the 2011 census the figure was 1,735, in 644 households spread over 4.72 square kilometres, so almost everything domestic here arrived in the twentieth century and dropped into lanes that were laid out for farms. The older fabric survives in patches: Chaldon Court is fourteenth-century timber frame, Rook Cottage dates from about 1600 and is thatched, and Rook Farm is an eighteenth-century flint house with a thatched barn beside it.
No caustic fumes in a small kitchen
The soaking is the part that smells, and it happens outside. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and go into a heated tank in the van, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are worked by hand indoors with non-caustic products, which matters more in a low-ceilinged room off a lane than it does in a new-build. Lanes, verges and no bus lane in sight
Chaldon sits high on the North Downs, immediately west of Caterham and 15.8 miles south of Charing Cross, with arable land and footpaths on most sides.
