In 1912 the Victoria County History of Surrey said simply: "There is no village of Chaldon." The parish ran about two miles north to south across the chalk and had 266 people in 1901, and most of it drew water from shallow wells and ponds that were empty in a dry summer.
The old core is on Church Lane. The church of St Peter and St Paul is listed Grade I, and Chaldon Court, also on Church Lane, is a 14th-century timber-framed house encased in brick and flint in the 18th century. Both sit in the Chaldon conservation area, designated on 18 December 1973. On the church's west wall is a doom painting of about 1200, 17 feet by 11, with a ladder of souls at its centre and a cauldron for boiling murderers in the lower half. It was found under whitewash during restoration work in 1869–70.

The houses came after that, spread along Chaldon Common Road, Rook Lane, Doctors Lane, Leazes Avenue, Heathway and Roffes Lane. A few are older than the rest. Rook Cottage, 82 Rook Lane, is a thatched timber-framed cottage of the late 16th century. At 18 and 20 Roffes Lane are two of the three cottages the architect Ernest Trobridge designed in 1920 with elm frames and almost no foundations; the third, No. 22, was pulled down in about 2014.
The Chaldon ward as it stood for the 2021 Census matches the parish almost exactly: 1,822 people lived there. Of its 673 households, 554 had a detached house. Three households lived in a purpose-built block of flats. A detached house often has a kitchen with room for a double oven or a freestanding range cooker, and a big kitchen is a likely place for an AGA.

Parking the van on Rook Lane and the other lanes
A drive is the easiest place for the van. On Rook Lane that matters more now. Surrey County Council's 2024 parking review approved double yellow lines on both sides of Rook Lane between the Church Lane and Hilltop Lane junction and the lines near Willey Broom Lane, more on the south side from the St Peter and St Paul school entrance to Rook Farm, and a school keep-clear marking enforced from 8.15am to 9.15am and 2.30pm to 4pm on weekdays. It went ahead with one change, an extra space on Willey Broom Lane, so the lines on your stretch may be new.
