Chafford Hundred is built round three old chalk pits, Warren Gorge, Lion Gorge and Grays Gorge, which were worked for chalk from the end of the 18th century and now form Essex Wildlife Trust's 81-hectare nature park off Drake Road. The estate took its name from the old Chafford hundred in 1987, and Thurrock Council dates the start of building to 1988. Houses and flats then went up in phases for three decades. One of the last schemes was Bellway's Devonshire Place, 102 homes off Devonshire Road, which was down to its final three two-bedroom flats in June 2020. The ground had been quarry and rough farmland, so there is no older house stock underneath.
Housebuilder kitchens of those years usually have an integrated oven: a built-in single under the worktop in the flats and smaller houses, often a built-in double at eye level in the bigger ones, and on some newer ovens a pyrolytic setting. The racks, trays and side runners lift out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.

At the 2021 Census the estate was split between two council wards. In South Chafford, the southern one, 30.8% of the 2,650 households rented from a private landlord or letting agency; across Thurrock the figure was 16.6%.
