St Mary's church has a nave built in the early twelfth century, is Grade I listed, and is the oldest building in the village, though there was a church standing on the site before the Norman conquest. The 2021 census put the built-up area at 10,685 people.

The name means cold spring
Domesday recorded the place in 1086 as Celdeuuella, which Reaney's Place Names of Essex reads as 'cold spring', and the two manors then in the parish were held by the Bishop of London and by Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, before the land was later divided into four: Chadwell, Ingleby, Longhouse and Biggin. The ancient parish ran south to take in the ground where Tilbury grew into a port town from the nineteenth century. Chadwell was abolished as a civil parish in 1936 and survives as an ecclesiastical one.
Three councillors, and family kitchens
The javelin champion Fatima Whitbread grew up in Chadwell St Mary, and Chadwell returns three councillors to Thurrock Council.
