Whalebone Lane is named after whalebones set up where it crosses the High Road: in 1641 it was noted that the rib of a whale had lately been put up there, and a map of 1652 shows a whalebone standing in the middle of the road.

The county history found nothing older than the 19th century standing here in the 1960s. Some of the last commoners' cottages came down in 1895, and Whalebone House, which had an 18th-century front, was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. Building picked up after 1918, and the Victoria County History says the new houses north of the railway, especially between the High Road and Eastern Avenue, were put up mainly by private builders. South of the railway, the first part of the Becontree estate went up.
A privately built house of the inter-war years usually had a small kitchen at the back; where it has been extended into the garden there is room for a built-in double or a 90cm range. The census area the House of Commons Library calls Chadwell Heath East, which takes in Whalebone Lane North, had 3,929 households in 2021. 30.5% rented privately, against 24.2% across the whole borough, while 55.6% owned and 13.3% rented from a social landlord. 35.7% lived in a terraced house, 27.4% in a semi and 25.4% in a purpose-built flat.
Chadwell Heath ward is one of the wards in Barking and Dagenham's selective licensing designation, which came into force on 6 April 2025 and runs for five years. It covers most privately rented homes let to a single household. Smaller shared houses (3 or 4 people forming 2 or more households) have needed an additional licence across the whole borough since 9 January 2025. Between tenants, agents can have our invoice made out to the agency and photos for the checkout file, and keys for an empty house can be picked up by arrangement.
Zone CH was extended to streets off the High Road in June 2025
The council's order extending zone CH came into force on 23 June 2025. Its road list includes Kings Avenue, Gordon Road, Sylvan Avenue, Burchett Way, Whalebone Avenue and part of Hainault Road, plus parts of the High Road between Whalebone Lane South and Coombewood Drive. The bays are for zone CH permit holders, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, and some are shared with pay-by-phone parking, with a 4-hour maximum stay and no return within 2 hours.
Outside those hours the permit bays are not controlled. A resident can buy a visitor permit online for the van, and the council says it is instant once paid. The road name helps us plan where the team can park.

The roads above were added on 23 June 2025, some only in part, and zone CH already covered other streets before that. The council publishes the list with a scheme plan, and the signs at the end of your road have the final word.
How long is the van parked for a double oven?
About 2 hours, which fits inside the 4-hour limit on the shared bays. A 90cm range takes 2 to 3 hours.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, seven days a week. A weekend visit costs the same as a weekday, and zone CH is not controlled at weekends.
I am a landlord. Can you clean the oven while the house is empty?
Yes. Keys can be collected by arrangement, and the invoice can go to you or your agent.
