Castelnau began in 1825 as Upper Bridge Street, a new road from Barnes village to the Hammersmith toll bridge, and later took the name of Major Boileau's family estate. The houses off it run from Boileau's villas of 1842 to council cottages of the 1920s.
Villas, mansion flats and cottages near the bridge
First came twenty pairs of classical villas in 1842: yellow stock brick, stucco Ionic pilasters, two storeys over a basement. Nos. 84 to 122 and 91 to 125 Castelnau are listed Grade II. Lonsdale Road, mostly finished by 1860, has bigger three- and four-storey Italianate and Gothic villas. On the east side, Arundel Terrace was first built in 1858 for workers at Cowan's soap factory, and three-storey mansion flats went up along its north side in 1898. Riverview Gardens has three- and four-storey mansion blocks of similar design. Glentham Road, Lillian Road and St Hilda's Road are narrow streets of small Victorian cottages whose front doors open straight onto the pavement.
For an oven clean, what changes between them is the walk from the kerb. If a villa's kitchen is down in the basement, that means steps; a mansion flat on the second floor means stairs, and a Lillian Road cottage is a few paces from the kerb. Say which you have when you ring.
The LCC's Castelnau estate
West of the main road, on old market-garden land, the London County Council built a cottage estate in the 1920s: about 640 houses on 51 acres, with 2,851 people living there by 1938. Its roads carry the names of Deans of St Paul's who were lords of the manor of Barnes, among them Howsman, Kilmington, Alderbury, Everdon, Kentwode and Stillingfleet. The houses passed to Richmond council in 1971, and many have been sold since.
Social renting is still common in parts of it. In the small census area that takes in Howsman, Kilmington and Alderbury Roads, 53.7% of the 607 households rented from the council or a housing association in 2021; across the whole of Barnes ward the figure was 16.0%. Cottage-estate houses of that era were built with modest kitchens, which usually leaves room for a freestanding 60cm cooker or a built-in single under the worktop. The price follows the appliance. A single, a double, a 90cm range and a two-oven AGA each have one figure, and the one agreed on the phone is what you pay, on Howsman Road or on Lonsdale Road. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, on top of dust sheets.
Parking the van in Castelnau's two zones
Richmond lists two controlled zones at this end of Barnes, and the hours are very different.
- Zone B, Hammersmith Bridge
- Monday to Friday, 10am to 6.30pm. Since 27 January 2025 it also covers Arundel Terrace, Merthyr Terrace, Glentham Road, Glentham Gardens, Lillian Road and St Hilda's Road.
- Zone B1, Barnes
- Monday to Friday, 10am to noon, on all roads except part of Station Road. The council's 2010 order for B1 lists the estate roads, Howsman to Stillingfleet, and most house numbers on Castelnau itself.
Both are free at weekends on these streets, and we work weekends at the weekday price. The council's notice on the Zone B extension lists the newer streets; for anywhere else, the plate at the end of your road is the answer, and a weekday visit near the bridge may need one of your visitor permits.
Castelnau questions
Hammersmith Bridge is shut to cars. Can the van still get to Castelnau?
Yes. The bridge closed to motor traffic in 2019 and reopened in July 2021 only for people on foot and on bikes, which was still the position in June 2026. The van comes in from the Barnes end.
Does a villa or a Lonsdale Road house cost more than an estate house?
No. A single oven is £77 and a 90cm range is £143 wherever it is; a bigger kitchen only matters if it holds a bigger cooker.
Can the invoice go to my letting agent?
Yes. It can be addressed to the agency, photos of the clean oven can go into the checkout file if the agent asks, and keys for an empty house can be picked up by arrangement.
