In 1851 the new township south and east of Barking Road station was called Plaistow New Town: about 80 houses, mostly in or near Victoria Dock Road. By 1855 it was known as Hallsville, apparently after the owner of some of the houses, and within 10 or 15 years that name had dropped out of use, except for a road.
A council ward since the 2022 boundaries
Canning Town South is a Newham council ward with three councillors, on the boundaries first used at the May 2022 elections. It takes in the streets east of Canning Town station and south towards Victoria Dock Road: Rathbone Street, Tant Avenue, Vincent Street, St Lukes Square, Radland Road, Rogers Road and Scoulding Road, with Bray Drive, Tarling Road and Pollard Close near the Royal Victoria end.
In the Second World War, the county history says, damage in West Ham was heaviest in the south, especially in the old Tidal Basin ward, which had contained some of the worst slums. One Victorian survivor is the Church of St Luke on Jude Street, built in 1873 to 1875 to designs by Giles and Gane and listed at Grade II since 1994.
Flats, old and new
The ward had about 2,800 households at the 2021 Census, and 78.1% of them lived in a purpose-built block; only 12.2% had a terraced house. Private renting (38.5%) and social renting (37.5%, about half of it from the council) were almost level, with 19.9% owning and 3.9% in shared ownership.
New building here includes Hallsville Quarter, opposite the station, part of the council's Canning Town programme that began in December 2000. The council's page for its third phase gives 620 new homes, 102 of them shared ownership and 97 for social rent. A flat in a new block often has a built-in oven with the hob set into the worktop, and an older flat may have a freestanding cooker. Both get the same visit: the racks, trays and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and glass are cleaned by hand indoors.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
