Ferrier Point, the 24-storey tower on Forty Acre Lane, has 115 flats. Newham's own building workforce started it in 1966. The lane's name once covered the whole road down to Bow Creek; now only this short stretch keeps it.
A district rebuilt twice
Beside the tower is Edwin Street. The county history says that about 1868 a speculator laid out streets of that name, with Bradley and Thomas Streets, on Cherry Island, a small market garden partly surrounded by marsh ditches, and built squalid cottages that were a nuisance to the local board for years. By Newham Council's own account, 85% of Canning Town's housing was demolished after the war, and the district became known for council estates and high-rise blocks like Ferrier Point.
The second rebuilding began in December 2000, when the council set up its Canning Town and Custom House regeneration programme. The council counts around 3,700 homes delivered or under way since. Between Fife Road and Newham Way, Countryside Properties built 649 homes, called East City Point, from May 2011 to June 2018, along with a new Keir Hardie Primary School; 35% of those homes are affordable. Hallsville Quarter, by the station, was begun in 2012, and the council describes its third phase as 620 new homes, 102 of them for shared ownership and 97 for social rent.
Ovens in council towers and new blocks
The streets round Ferrier Point are nearly all flats. In the census area that includes the tower and Edwin Street, 70.1% of households lived in a purpose-built block in 2021, and 60.8% rented from a social landlord, most of them (45.5% of all households) from the council. Only 21.0% rented privately and 15.6% owned.
A flat in a new block may have a built-in single oven under an electric hob, while a council flat may have a freestanding cooker. On a high floor the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Meanwhile the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, with dust sheets down first.

Parking in the two Canning Town zones
Ferrier Point, Edwin Street, the Keir Hardie school and Hallsville Quarter all fall in Newham's Canning Town zone, where permits are needed from 8am to 6.30pm every day except Sunday. Rathbone Market, further west on Barking Road, is in Canning Town North, where the controls run only from 10am to 2pm on weekdays. Both sets of hours are on the council's zone table. A tower block's car park is often for residents only, so tell us where the van can stop.

Can you clean a new-build oven in Hallsville Quarter before I hand the keys back?

Is Rathbone Market part of Canning Town?
Yes. Rathbone Market, on Barking Road near the station, was redeveloped in the regeneration, and the community neighbourhood centre that opened there in September 2017 holds the Canning Town library. The streets north of the station towards West Ham have their own Star Lane page.
How long does it take?
About 90 minutes for a single oven and about 2 hours for a double. The oven needs to be cool when we arrive.
