Cann Hall, also written Canons Hall, was the manor that the canons of Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate, held here from about 1121 until the priory was dissolved in 1532.
The Colegrave estate, built over in 15 years
William Colegrave bought the manor in 1671, and his family held it into the 19th century, usually letting it to tenants. Most of the estate was developed for building between about 1880 and 1895, and by 1895 the district was almost entirely built over, though the family held on to part of it until 1900. Their names are still on the street signs. Worsley Road is in the ward; Downsell Road and Ellingham Road, also named after the family and its connections, now sit just over the line in Cathall.
The Colgrave Arms, at 145 Cann Hall Road, was put up for sale in the summer of 2010. A group bought it and formed a trust, and it is now the Cann Hall Masjid.
Cann Hall is still a ward name. The boundary review that took effect at the May 2022 elections gave Cann Hall ward three councillors, with Leytonstone High Road as its edge with Cathall.
Terraced houses, council flats and private lets
At the 2021 Census the ward had 5,652 households. 46.4% lived in a terraced house, 26.7% in a purpose-built block and 9.8% in a flat in a converted house. 38.0% owned their home, 31.0% rented from a social landlord (20.8% from the council) and 29.8% rented privately.
In a terrace of the 1880s or 1890s the kitchen is often at the back, in the rear addition, and the cooker there can be anything from a slim freestanding model to a built-in double. When a private let ends, the oven goes on the checkout inventory; the agency can have our invoice in its own name, with photos for the file on request.
Reaching your street in the low traffic neighbourhood
The streets either side of Cann Hall Road are in the South Leytonstone low traffic neighbourhood. It began as an experiment in 2020, and the council made it permanent in spring 2022. The temporary filters have since been upgraded to permanent ones on roads including Woodhouse Road, Montague Road and Thorpe Road, with Ramsay Road among those still to come (see the council's scheme page). The council's own leaflet says every address can still be reached by vehicle, though the route in may change, so give us the house number and the nearest junction when you call.
The council's zone map (March 2026) puts the streets between Harrow Road and Cann Hall Road, Woodhouse Road and Matcham Road among them, in Cann Hall East (CHE), and Worsley Road in Cann Hall (CH). Both are controlled Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, so the van needs one of your visitor permits on a Saturday too; Sunday is free of both. The sign at the end of your road has the final word.

There is a planter across my road. Can the van still get to me?
The council says every address stays reachable by vehicle, though the route in may change. The team needs somewhere to park, so give us the nearest junction when you book.
My terrace is split into two flats. Is each one priced separately?
Yes. Each oven has its own price, so two flats with a single each are two singles at £77.
Is a weekend visit dearer?
No. Saturday and Sunday cost the same as a weekday. The Buxton School street does not run at weekends, and on a Sunday the CHE and CH zones are not controlled either.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
