In Camberwell Green ward, which takes in the Elmington Estate and Addington Square, 76.3% of households at the 2021 Census lived in a purpose-built block of flats. Only 6.6% had a terraced house. Sceaux Gardens, the first of Camberwell's post-war estates
East of the Green, off Peckham Road, the Sceaux Gardens Estate went up in 1955. Southwark's appraisal of the conservation area around it explains that the old Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, one of the few with its own architects' department, started a council housing programme under F O Hayes after the war, and Sceaux Gardens came first: flats, maisonettes and bungalows designed around parts of the older landscape. The name comes from Sceaux, near Paris, which the borough had links with.

Addington Square, by Burgess Park
North of the Green, on the east side of Camberwell Road, Addington Square has been a conservation area since 9 July 1971. The council says its buildings date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, that the square is not all terraced, and that the buildings are not all the same height or style. Burgess Park bounds the square to the east and meets Camberwell Road at the conservation area's northern edge. Whichever floor the kitchen is on, mention the stairs when you call.

Parking on Camberwell's zones and estates
Southwark's zone list has K (Camberwell), NC (North Camberwell) and EC (East Camberwell), all controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6.30pm. The council's zone map puts the streets around the Green in K, Addington Square in NC and the streets beside the Elmington Estate in EC, but check the sign on the bay. Estates can have parking rules separate from the zones, and estate tenants and leaseholders can buy visitor permits from the council. Outside zone hours street permits are not needed, so a weekend visit, at the weekday price, avoids them; on estate roads, read the estate signs.

Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, seven days a week, and a weekend visit costs the same as a weekday one. Zones K, NC and EC are controlled on weekdays only.
Where is the oven cleaned, and does the price change?
The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand at the oven, normally in your kitchen. Some teams have a heated tank on the van and use it when they can park close, otherwise everything is done in the kitchen. The price is the same either way, and you can ask when you book.
My SE5 address is in Lambeth. Is that still covered?
