Oven cleaning in Byfleet, KT14, from the High Road conservation area out to the Brooklands edge. Dip-tank method, seven days a week, single ovens from £77.

The Old Fire Station stands at the west end of High Road, built in 1885 by Sir John Ellis, a local resident who had been Lord Mayor of London, and it served the village until it closed in 1963. High Road still winds. It carries 16th and 17th century timber-framed houses with listed status, and its west end is a conservation area.

The village is nine centuries older than the motorway beside it

Byfleet is in the Domesday Book as Byeflete. Byfleet Manor is Grade II* and largely dates to 1686, and St Mary's church has a 14th century core. Housing here is mostly owner-occupied, with a rental share below the national average, which shifts the work away from end-of-tenancy deadlines and towards ovens that have been in one family's use for years, cleaned when the door glass finally goes too dark to see the shelf through. A double oven in a High Road house is £110.

Brooklands sets the northern edge

The former Brooklands motor circuit and aerodrome lies just north, and the village borders the retail park built across its western part, with Mercedes-Benz World at the northern end. The circuit opened in 1907, the aircraft factories that followed it through the First World War are why the village grew when it did, and the northern bypass carried the 2012 Olympic road races.

Where the van stands decides the morning

Byfleet & New Haw station on the South West Main Line serves the village, and Parvis Road, Chertsey Road and Oyster Lane take most of what moves through it. The tank is in the van, so the van needs to stand within a carry of the kitchen door. Tell us if the drive is shared. It changes the slot, not the price.

Questions from Byfleet

Is there a charge for coming out this far?

No. The price is fixed and quoted on the phone before we book, with no premium-area surcharge on a KT14 address.

Do the racks leave the house?

They go as far as the van. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak in a heated tank out there, then come back in. Cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products.

Can you take a range cooker in an old cottage kitchen?

Yes. A 90cm range is £114 and a two-oven AGA is £143. Cast-iron doors and heavy lids are part of the job.

How long does it take?

About 90 minutes for a single, roughly two hours for a double. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
