At Bush Hill the New River crosses Salmons Brook on an earth bank, and the brook runs beneath it through Clarendon Arch, a brick tunnel whose stone arch ring says it was rebuilt in 1682, when the Earl of Clarendon was governor of the New River Company. A second stone records that a frame of timber and lead had carried the river across for 173 years before the bank replaced it in 1786.

Sir Hugh Myddelton probably built the first house at Bush Hill around 1613, while he was making the New River, and by 1664 it was the largest house in Edmonton parish, assessed on 31 hearths. Horace Barry bought it in 1878; after his death the house and part of its grounds, by then called Halliwick, went in 1911 to the trustees of a home for disabled girls, and the southern part of the estate was sold to builders. After the Second World War the council put housing on more of the old grounds.
The Victoria County History, writing in 1976, summed up Bush Hill as terraced and semi-detached houses of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a wooded golf course on the Enfield border. A semi of that age often has its kitchen at the back, and the cooker may be a built-in double or a freestanding one.
