Bulls Cross turns up in the record as Bedelscrosse in 1465. The road runs north from Maiden's Bridge over part of Ermine Street, the Roman road that joined London to York, and it crosses the original course of the New River, cut between 1609 and 1613. Bullsmoor Lane closes the hamlet off to the north, Forty Hall to the south, the New River to the east, and the whole of it lies in the Metropolitan Green Belt west of the A10.
A Regency villa and eight acres of garden
Henry Carrington Bowles put up Myddelton House in 1818, naming it for Hugh Myddelton, who died in 1631 and had built the New River. Eight acres of garden went round it, worked through the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Edward Augustus Bowles, the Crocus King, took the place on in the late 19th century and spent the next fifty years making a garden there that is still open to visitors, and since 1972 the house has served as headquarters of the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. Forty Hall, the mansion at the southern end, was built in the 1620s.
No station, and a walk from the bus
The 217 and 317 run along the A10 Great Cambridge Road, and from the stop it is about ten minutes on foot west down Turkey Street or Bullsmoor Lane. Nobody carries oven trays that far. Everything comes in by van, which is where the heated tank sits anyway, so the metalwork only ever travels between your kitchen and the kerb outside.
