Buckingham Gate was pieced together from shorter streets. Its western stretch was laid out between 1853 and 1858 by Pennethorne, a realignment of Buckingham Palace Road that gave the Palace more room, and the eastern part was called James Street and Little James Street before it took the same name.

The census shows how far flats dominate. In the census area around Buckingham Gate and the west end of Victoria Street (Westminster 020A), 85.3% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats in 2021, and 62.3% rented privately.

Parking the van in Westminster's zone D
Buckingham Gate is in Westminster's parking zone D, which the council lists as Victoria, Westminster and Millbank. From March 2026 the paid bays and single yellow lines in zone D are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. Westminster runs no on-street visitor permit scheme, so on a weekday a van pays for a bay by app or phone, and the usual maximum stay is four hours, long enough for a double or a range.
