Brunswick Park was in Hertfordshire until 1965, part of East Barnet, and the name is Victorian: it may honour Frederick William of Brunswick, a hero of the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815, or Caroline of Brunswick, wife of George IV.
The cemetery and the telephone works
The Great Northern Railway opened its cemetery here in 1861, with a mortuary station for coffins sent up from King's Cross until the 1870s. The Great Northern Cemetery, now New Southgate Cemetery, covered 80 acres at its largest. In 1922 Standard Telephones and Cables opened a factory on and north of the mortuary station's site, and at its peak it employed nearly 10,000 people; 33 were killed when it was hit in the Second World War. The works is now North London Business Park.
The business park is a 16.53-hectare site. A consent for 1,350 homes in blocks of two to nine storeys, with a secondary school, was first granted on appeal in 2020 and has since been varied. A larger scheme of 2,419 homes was refused on appeal in March 2024, the inspector finding it 'totally at odds with the established suburban character of the neighbourhood'. Flats in a new scheme like that usually come with an integrated single or double oven, sometimes pyrolytic.
Two-storey houses on tight plots
Barnet's 2010 characterisation study, quoted in the 2024 decision, notes that substantial development took place round the business park between the wars and that the surrounding area is predominantly detached and semi-detached two-storey housing; the inspector saw terraces, semis and detached houses on fairly tight, uniform plots, with shopping parades on Oakleigh Road North and Russell Lane.
Round Brunswick Avenue, Brunswick Crescent and Brunswick Grove the Census small area (Barnet 010D) had 732 households in 2021: 37.3% lived in a terraced house, 33.1% in a semi and 21.0% in a purpose-built flat, and 64.7% owned their home.
