Brondesbury got its name in 1867, a year after Christ Church was built to serve a new district of villas on land the Ecclesiastical Commissioners were selling for building.
The Avenue: villas divided into flats
The Avenue is one of the oldest roads here. By the late 1860s a road then called Cavendish Road had been laid out south-west from Willesden Lane, along the stretch later named The Avenue, and some detached villas had been built. In 1949 the Victoria County History found Brondesbury's highest density of people on The Avenue, 35 an acre against an average of 27, and noted that many of the large houses had been converted into flats.
Few are single homes now. In one small census area on The Avenue (Brent 023A), only 4.5% of the 887 households in 2021 had a whole house to themselves; 46.2% lived in part of a converted or shared house and 47.0% in a purpose-built block. More than half, 52.0%, rented privately.

In a divided villa the flat may be on the lower ground floor or two flights up. Either way, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, with dust sheets down first.

The Brondesbury conservation area villas
A few streets to the north-east, Brent designated the Brondesbury conservation area in March 1990 around Mowbray Road, with parts of Mapesbury Road, Christchurch Avenue and Cavendish Road. Brent's appraisal describes extremely large houses in Italianate and Gothic styles, mostly three storeys high and two bays wide. William Hancock built most of the double-fronted villas on Mowbray Road between 1883 and 1886, and W. A. Pryor built the pairs at 29 to 63 and 34 to 64 Cavendish Road, with raised entrances up wide stone steps and lower ground floors set in lightwells. Brent's Cabinet added those Cavendish Road pairs and part of Chatsworth Road to the area on 28 May 2024. The same history records council houses built later in the area: 136 around Christchurch Avenue and Chatsworth Road and 95 on Willesden Lane.

Weekday parking zones around The Avenue
On Brent's zone map The Avenue is in zone KS, controlled only from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, and the conservation area streets to the north, Mowbray Road and most of Cavendish Road, are in zone MK with the same short hours. Across the railway the hours are longer: Winchester Avenue and the Brondesbury end of Salusbury Road are in zone KQ and Kimberley Road in KD, both 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays, according to Brent's list of zones. That list gives none of the four any weekend hours, though Brent's map shows longer hours on the August bank holiday Monday in KQ, and the signs on your street have the final word.
Brondesbury oven cleaning questions
Is Brondesbury the same place as Brondesbury Park?
They overlap, and The Avenue is in Brent's Brondesbury Park ward. Brondesbury is the older villa district between Willesden Lane and the railway; Brondesbury Park is the long road west of here and the streets built on the old manor grounds.
My flat is on the lower ground floor. Is that a problem?
No. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand in the kitchen, whichever floor it is on. We need a working socket and the oven cool when we arrive.
Can you collect keys for an empty flat?
Yes, by arrangement with the landlord or the agent, and the invoice can be made out to the agency.
Do I need a permit for the van on The Avenue?
Only for any part of the visit between 10am and 3pm on a weekday, when zone KS is controlled, going by Brent's list. Weekends have no permit hours on that list and cost the same as weekdays; the signs on your street have the final word.
