Bromley-by-Bow station opened in 1858 as plain Bromley and took its present name in 1967, apparently to avoid confusion with the stations in the London Borough of Bromley.
St Andrew's and the new flats by the station
Next to the station stood St Andrew's Hospital, opened in 1868 as the Poplar and Stepney Sick Asylum and closed in 2006. The Legacy Corporation's planning document for Bromley-by-Bow records what replaced it: 964 homes by Barratt London, laid out to a masterplan by Allies and Morrison, with a health centre and shared open spaces.
Across the A12, the same document gives the first phase of Bromley-by-Bow North, in the part of the site down to Hancock Road, as 219 homes: 36 for sale on the open market, 48 for private rent, 61 in shared ownership and 74 affordable, due to finish in September 2016. The parish's Jacobean palace on St Leonard's Street, with a stone dated 1606, was pulled down by the London School Board in the 1890s; the first volume of the Survey of London (1900) is about this parish and records that its state room went to the South Kensington Museum.
Flats built in the last twenty years usually have an integrated single oven, under the hob or at eye level, and a separate extractor above the hob. The A12, the Tesco and getting the van in
The Blackwall Tunnel Approach Road splits Bromley-by-Bow in two. A Tesco-led plan for the Bromley-by-Bow South site won permission in 2010, but the Secretary of State did not confirm the compulsory purchase in 2011. The Corporation's planning document, adopted on 27 April 2017, plans a district centre there with new homes, a primary school and a 1.2-hectare park.

Renting and shared ownership in Bromley North ward
Bromley North ward, which covers the station, St Andrew's and Hancock Road, had 4,524 households at the 2021 Census, and 83.6% of them lived in purpose-built flats. Parking on Bromley-by-Bow's streets

On the council's zone map the station and the streets around it are sub-zone B2, with B3 to the south; the council's zone page gives B2 and most of B3 as controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.
