The oldest buildings in the Brockley conservation area are three labourers' cottages at 1-3 Coulgate Street, by Brockley Cross, built in 1833 near the Croydon Canal. The canal had a short working life. In the 1840s the London to Brighton railway company bought it and turned it into a railway.
Small terraces on Harefield Road
Lewisham's character appraisal of the Brockley conservation area treats the western ends of Harefield Road and Cranfield Road as a character area of their own. The roads are narrower than the main roads through the area, the houses smaller and mostly in two-storey terraces of a few houses each, though they copy the stucco and sash windows of the grander streets. Nos 3-53 Cranfield Road were up by 1863, when it was still called Cranbury Road, and a group of four at the brow of the hill in Harefield Road probably came a few years later. Harefield Mews, the lane from Harefield Road to Wickham Gardens, is the only service road in the area that keeps its original granite setts.
The main roads have the bigger houses. The same appraisal says Lillie Langtry, the actress, is believed to have lived at 42 Wickham Road, and Marie Lloyd lived at 196 Lewisham Way. The southern end of the conservation area was built up in the 1880s, probably influenced by the opening of Brockley station, and Hilly Fields became a public park in 1896 once local people had raised the money to buy the farmland.
Converted houses and council flats round Brockley Cross
In the census area around Harefield Road and Coulgate Street (Lewisham 008D), 24.6% of the 764 households lived in part of a converted or shared house at the 2021 Census and 46.5% in a purpose-built block. Only 18.2% had a terraced house of their own. Owning was the largest tenure at 36.8%, with social renting close behind at 35.5% (22.3% renting from the council itself); 26.3% rented privately.
The appraisal explains the conversions. After the war many of the larger houses were shared by several families, and many were later split into self-contained flats, though some have since gone back to being single family homes. A flat cut out of a villa usually has a compact kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker. A house back in family use is where a double oven or a 90cm range is more likely.
Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. Dust sheets go down before anything is taken apart.

Parking controls approved for Harefield Road
Lewisham's Mayor and Cabinet have approved parking controls in Brockley ward on four roads: Harcourt Road, Harefield Road, Geoffrey Road and Foxberry Road. The council's Sustainable Streets page says the designs are still being finalised and a statutory consultation will come first, and the borough's table of zones has no Brockley zone yet. Check the signs on your street when you book. The team needs somewhere to park, so give us the house number as well as the road.

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
