Electric Avenue was laid out between 1888 and 1891 and was one of the first streets in England to be lit by electricity. It was first meant to be called Palmerston Avenue.
Mansion flats in central Brixton
Brixton grew quickly once the railway came, from 20,067 people in 1861 to 73,405 by 1891. Lambeth's 2012 statement for the town centre says mansion flats went up along Coldharbour Lane, Rushcroft Road and Canterbury Crescent, were said to be popular with music hall performers, and in some cases have flat roofs used as shared space. The covered markets came later: Reliance Arcade in the mid-1920s, Market Row in 1928, and Granville Arcade, now Brixton Village, in 1936, with a block of four-storey flats along its Coldharbour Lane front.
A flat in a block like these usually has a compact kitchen, often with a slim freestanding cooker or a built-in single, and a shared stair to the street. Every rack, tray and runner comes out and is soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Poets' Corner, off Railton Road
South of the centre, four fields of Effra Farm were bought by the Westminster Freehold Land Society in 1855 and laid out as Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare and Milton Roads, between Dulwich Road and a footpath that later became Railton Road. Societies like this sold small plots so that skilled workers could own a house and with it a vote. Most plots were built on piecemeal, with two, three or four small houses at a time, and the speculative builders copied designs from pattern books, so the houses vary a great deal. Lambeth's 1998 designation report notes that many of the earlier houses included basements and attics, while those built towards the end of the 1870s have their main rooms at ground level.

Brixton Windrush ward, which runs from Electric Avenue and Coldharbour Lane down Railton Road, had 4,088 households at the 2021 Census. 47.0% rented from a social landlord, two thirds of them from a housing association, and 27.7% rented privately. 21.0% owned their home and another 4.2% were in shared ownership. 57.1% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 18.0% in part of a converted house.

Free bays in central Brixton are too short
Lambeth has a few free short-stay bays in the centre: 30 on Brixton Station Road between Pope's Road and Gresham Road and on Valentia Place, four in Electric Lane and two on Saltoun Road. Each allows one free hour, with no return to the same space for two hours. A single oven takes about 90 minutes on site, so the van needs a proper bay.
