Brimsdown station opened on 1 October 1884 at the end of Green Street, and by 1897 Brimsdown Avenue, Osborne Road and Mayfield Road had been laid out with a scattering of new houses.
Terraces and semis west of the railway
Those first roads were not fully built up until after the First World War. In the 1930s the council added a large estate north of the station, inside the square made by Bell Lane, Brimsdown Avenue, Croft Road and Redlands Road, and in 1937 an Enfield architect, Frank Lee, designed the Westmoor estate. Almost all the housing is on the west side of the Lea Valley line.
The result is a district of houses. In the census area the House of Commons Library names Brimsdown Avenue (MSOA Enfield 007), 46.4% of the 2,800 households in 2021 lived in a terraced house, 31.6% in a semi and 7.6% in a detached house; only 9.1% were in a purpose-built block of flats, against 30.4% across the borough. 53.9% owned their home, 28.5% rented privately and 17.0% rented from the council or a housing association.
In terraces like these the cooker is often freestanding, or a built-in double fitted when the kitchen was redone. Either way the oven is stripped in the kitchen on dust sheets. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand, and the door is split where its design allows.

The factory side of the line
East of the railway Brimsdown is industrial, and has been for more than a century. The North Metropolitan Electric Power Supply Co. opened a power station here in 1907, extended it from 1924 onto 41 acres acquired from Trinity College, Cambridge, and employed some 700 people around 1960. Ruberoid began making roofing materials at Brimsdown in 1910, Enfield Rolling Mills followed in 1924, and by 1932 most sites along the Lea were taken and factories were spreading towards the station. Enfield Power Station now stands on part of the old power station site. The station itself was a location for the 1951 film The Man in the White Suit.

Parking for the van in Brimsdown
Enfield Council's map of controlled parking zones, in the copy archived in December 2022, has no zone in Brimsdown, on either side of the railway.
