Ford ran its UK operations from a headquarters on Eagle Way in Warley for more than 50 years. The house builder Fairview announced in January 2020 that it had bought the 21-acre site and sold the main office building on to Land Charter, and that building is now flats: 330 of them over seven floors, according to one of the contractors on the conversion.

Warley grew after the railway reached Brentwood in 1840 and the rest of Warley Common was enclosed in 1843. Two of its big institutions are now housing. The county asylum, opened in 1853 and later called Warley Hospital, closed in 2001 and became the Clements Park, Galleries and Mascalls Park estates. The Ilford photographic factory on Woodman Road, opened in 1903, became the Brackenwood estate.
The 2021 Census shows two kinds of Brentwood. In the town wards of Brentwood South and Brentwood West, close to four in ten households lived in a purpose-built block of flats (38.9% and 38.5%). In Shenfield 55.7% lived in a detached house, and in Hutton South 55.4%. Across the whole borough, 71.9% of the 32,343 households owned their home and 16.0% rented privately.
The flats in the town centre and at Warley tend to have a built-in single. The detached houses of Shenfield and Hutton are where a double, a 90cm range or an AGA is more likely, and those take longer on the day.

Parking in Brentwood under the South Essex partnership
Street parking in Brentwood is looked after by the South Essex Parking Partnership. Ingatestone grew up along the old Roman road that became the A12, was a coaching centre in the 18th century and grew in the 20th as commuters moved in; its built-up area, which includes Mountnessing, had 5,410 people in 2021, and Ingatestone Hall has been the Petre family's home since the 1500s. Doddinghurst parish had 2,758 people at the 2021 Census and Navestock 646.
West Horndon is a village that grew up around a station opened in 1886, and Dunton Hills, to the east of the village, is planned as a garden village of up to 3,700 homes. In the 2021 Census ward of Ingatestone, Fryerning and Mountnessing, 34.3% of households lived in a detached house.

I have a flat in the converted Ford building at Warley. How long will the oven take?
A built-in single takes about 90 minutes. The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, the cavity and door glass are done by hand in the flat, and you look at the lit oven before we leave.
