Bread Street is under 500 feet long and named after a market
The street the ward is named for runs just under 500 feet, and it was written down as Bredstrate by about 1180; a royal decree in 1302 told the City's bakers they could sell their bread there and nowhere else. The ward reaches from Cheapside and Newgate Street down towards Queen Victoria Street, with Cordwainer east and Castle Baynard west. One New Change opened on the Cheapside frontage in 2010, and Paternoster Square has held the London Stock Exchange since 2004. Almost none of that is housing.
Neither of the ward's two Wren churches survives. All Hallows Bread Street came down in 1876 and St Mildred, Bread Street burned in the Blitz in 1941, so no church stands in the ward at all. John Milton and John Donne were both born here.

Not many people, and that is the honest answer. The residential side is a handful of flats over the older Cheapside frontages, plus corporate and short lets an agent turns round between bookings. At the 2025 Common Council elections Bread Street was one of the wards where no vote happened, because nobody stood against the sitting members. Offices do not book oven cleans.

What the tank does and what we do by hand
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go into a heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased indoors by hand with non-caustic products, and the door is split where the design allows so the inside of the glass gets done. The oven is heat-tested before we go. No chemical smell in a small flat.
Where do you park around Bread Street?
City pay-by-phone bays, four hours maximum, priced by vehicle emissions. Cheapside is busy, so we work the parts down one of the courts on foot.
Do you charge extra for the Congestion Charge?
No. Our price is the price quoted on the phone and there is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
Do you clean pyrolytic ovens?
Yes. The self-clean cycle bakes residue to ash and leaves the door glass, the seal and the fan cover untouched, so there is still a job.
