The village of Box Hill stands on higher ground east of the summit itself, and while its earliest flint cottages date from the 1800s, most of what is there now went up in the first half of the 20th century, which puts the housing stock a good century younger than the name.
Most of Box Hill has no kitchens on it
The western part of the hill belongs to the National Trust, around 500 hectares of chalk downland and woods by the mid-1980s. The summit reaches 224 metres at Betchworth Clump, and the Salomons Memorial viewpoint sits at 172 metres looking over Dorking. None of that is housing. The village had an estimated 1,320 people in 2019, and that is where the ovens are, on and off Box Hill Road.
The Zig Zag is one way up, and not the only one
Zig Zag Road climbs 2.5km for 120 metres of height at a maximum gradient of 7.3%, and it first appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1869. The other approach is the B2033 and Boxhill Road, coming through the village from the west. Addresses here take a Tadworth post town and a KT20 postcode, and the district council is Mole Valley, not Reigate and Banstead. The Old Fort, the National Trust visitor centre, is KT20 7LB.
The dip tank does the hard part
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in the heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are hand-degreased indoors with non-caustic products, so no chemical smell is left behind, and the oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave. A hob in a Box Hill Road cottage is £23–28 on top of the oven. Fixed price, no premium-area surcharge for the hill.

Is a Box Hill booking the same as a Tadworth one?
The post town is Tadworth for both, but they are separate places a few miles apart. Give us the road and we will get it right.
Do you charge more because of the climb?
No. The figure is fixed on the phone and the geography does not enter into it.
Old cottage, small kitchen. Is there room to work?
The bulky part of the job happens at the van, so the space needed indoors is roughly the width of the open oven door.
