Tredegar Square, just north of Bow Road, stands on what were Morgan family fields until an Act of Parliament in 1824 allowed Sir Charles Morgan to build houses on them.
Tredegar Square and the streets behind Bow Road
Tower Hamlets designated the Tredegar Square conservation area in 1971, and its 2025 appraisal dates most of the building to between 1817 and 1860. The square is lined with three-storey terraced houses over basements; the north side is the grandest, with stucco and classical detail, and the other three are plain stock brick. The garden in the middle is protected under the London Squares Preservation Act of 1931. During the twentieth century many of the big houses were divided into flats.
The census area that covers the square (ONS area Tower Hamlets 003C) still had a high share of houses in 2021: 44.3% of its roughly 630 households lived in a terraced house and 19.0% in a flat within a converted house. Owners made up 45.7% and private renters 35.8%.
A converted floor of a Georgian house usually has a compact kitchen, often with a built-in single under the worktop. A whole house may have a double oven or a range. Either way the racks, trays and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.
Bow Quarter, the old match factory
East of Fairfield Road, the Bryant and May match factory closed in 1979 and was turned into Bow Quarter, which the council's Fairfield Road conservation area appraisal calls an inward-looking private housing development. The appraisal dates the Grade II listed works from 1861, with a new factory built in 1909 to 1911. In the census area that holds Bow Quarter (Tower Hamlets 004H), 59.3% of the roughly 640 households in 2021 lived in a converted building other than a house, such as a former factory, and 53.7% rented privately.

Most of the Victorian terraces in the Fairfield Road conservation area have no original basement; the same appraisal notes that the kitchen and scullery were put at the rear, in a back extension. A small rear kitchen leaves little room, so the dust sheets go down first and the oven is cleaned where it stands.

Parking round Tredegar Square and Bow Quarter
Tredegar Square is in Tower Hamlets sub-zone B2, which the council lists as controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm. The council says its zone restrictions apply to public roads only. Bow Quarter's roads are private, so the estate's own rules apply there.
