The gasworks on Bow Common Lane was built around 1850, engineered by Alexander Angus Croll for the Great Central Gas Consumers Company. In January 2026 the first residents moved into new flats on the 3.86-hectare site.

The Berkeley Group plans up to 1,700 homes there, 35% of them affordable, with a public park of 1.7 hectares. A Sainsbury's opened in February 2026; phase 2 started on site in 2026 and phase 3 is due to follow in 2027. The Mayor's 2020 planning report on the application treated the first phase as car-free, apart from disabled spaces.
Flats in new blocks often come with integrated ovens, and some of those have a pyrolytic self-clean cycle. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity and the fan cover are degreased by hand, and the door glass too, inside the glass where the door design allows.
Estates either side of Bow Common Lane
The name is older than any of the housing. This open land was Pesthouse Common in 1720 and Bow Common from the 1770s, and the common itself was gone by the mid-1800s. Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park was laid out on adjoining land to its north.
South of the gasworks, Poplar HARCA took over the Leopold estate (Geoff Cade Way, St Paul's Way, Ackroyd Drive and Bow Common Lane) in 2004 and finished rebuilding it in July 2018. The red blocks were refurbished, the grey blocks came down, and about 546 new homes went up in three phases, from social rent to private sale. The Lincoln estate, also run by Poplar HARCA, wraps round the north and east of the gasworks. On the corner of Burdett Road and St Paul's Way stands St Paul's Bow Common, built from 1958 to 1960 to designs by Robert Maguire and Keith Murray and now listed Grade II*.
At the 2021 Census, 85.5% of households in Mile End ward, which takes in the Leopold estate and the western end of Bow Common Lane, lived in purpose-built flats, and 42.3% rented from a social landlord (16.3% from the council, 26.0% from another social landlord). A kitchen on an estate like this is often a compact one with a single oven, built in or freestanding.

Parking for the van in zones B2 and B3
Bow Common is split between two of the council's sub-zones. The streets north of Bow Common Lane, such as Knapp Road beside the Lincoln estate, are mostly B2; the south side of the lane, St Paul's Way, Ackroyd Drive and the Burdett Road end are B3. On Tower Hamlets' zone list both are controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Burdett Road is part of Transport for London's red-route network, where the lines and signs decide where anything can stop. If your block has a loading bay or a booking system for deliveries, say so when you call.

In a street bay as close to your entrance as the zone rules allow. B2 and B3 are controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, so their hours do not apply at weekends, and a weekend visit costs the weekday price.
I am on a top floor of the Leopold estate. Is that a problem?

How long does a single oven take?

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
