Blackheath Westcombe is a Royal Greenwich ward, and the Standard is the junction in it where Old Dover Road, Westcombe Hill, Vanbrugh Park and Stratheden Parade meet.
Round the Royal Standard junction
The council's 2010 appraisal of the Westcombe Park conservation area calls the shops at the Standard the principal sector of commercial activity within it. Nos 156-188 Westcombe Hill were built as shops, and most still have their original marble pilasters under large console brackets. Nearby, Batley Green was Sheepgate Green in the 18th century, a crossing of four roads, shown with a large pond on 19th-century maps; around 1885 the local philanthropist William Fox Batley had it planted, railed and given public lavatories, and the name stuck.
Behind the shops, the big houses have been divided. In the census area round Stratheden Parade and the top of Westcombe Hill (Greenwich 021A), 333 of the 791 households lived in part of a converted or shared house in 2021, which is 42.1%, and 41.1% rented privately. A flat cut out of a Victorian house usually has a compact kitchen, often with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker, up a flight or two of stairs.
The Vanbrugh Park estate
Along Vanbrugh Park, west of the junction, is a 1960s council estate. Geoffrey Powell of Chamberlin, Powell and Bon designed Vanbrugh Park for the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich in 1961-65: an informal grid of two-storey terraces and maisonettes with garages, set among planting and garden walls on about 2.84 hectares, with one eight-storey block. It lies inside the Blackheath conservation area but is not listed. In the census area that covers it (Greenwich 016C), 58.0% of the 664 households lived in purpose-built flats, and 27.8% rented from the council.
Blackheath Westcombe ward at the 2021 Census
Across the whole ward, which also takes in part of the Victorian Westcombe Park estate and the Cator Estate, the census counted 6,798 households. 35.6% lived in a purpose-built block, 22.9% in a converted or shared house, 15.5% in a terraced house, 14.2% in a semi and 9.8% in a detached house. Just over half (52.2%) owned their home; 25.5% rented privately and 20.7% from the council or a housing association.
So the oven might be a built-in single in a converted flat or a range in a detached house. Either way, dust sheets go down, racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, with the door split where its design allows.

Parking zone BS and the traffic filters
The Standard has its own Royal Greenwich zone, Blackheath Standard (code BS), controlled from 9am to 6:30pm Monday to Saturday. The East Greenwich neighbourhood scheme, which Royal Greenwich decided to make permanent in February 2026, also puts camera filters on Vanbrugh Park at St Johns Park and on Langton Way at Old Dover Road, in force 7am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm on weekdays.
