Most of our SE3 work is the period houses around the heath, and that puts more range cookers and AGAs in front of us than a newer suburb would. The railway reached Blackheath in 1849, and the grand Victorian villas that followed, some in formal terraces, fill the Cator Estate behind the village, many carved into flats now. The Paragon, the crescent of seven linked houses off the heath dating from the 1790s, is the Georgian end of the same story.

A five-bedroom villa on the Cator Estate tends to hold a 90cm Rangemaster or Stoves, sometimes a two-oven AGA, while a converted flat off Tranquil Vale is more likely to have a built-in single. The range and the AGA cost more because there is more to lift out and soak: 90cm ranges are £114 and a two-oven AGA is £143. The clean, step by step
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and go into a heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and inner door glass are done by hand, indoors, with non-caustic products, which is why a period kitchen that opens onto the hall is left with no chemical smell. Then it is rebuilt, heat-tested and signed off. About ninety minutes for a single, two hours for a double.
Getting the van close
Parts ferry to the tank, so a spot near the door matters. The streets around Tranquil Vale and Montpelier Vale get busy, and the Sunday farmers' market fills the station car park, but the roads on the Cator Estate and up toward the heath are calmer. Greenwich Council dropped its planned Blackheath controlled parking zone late in 2025 after the consultation, so much of SE3 is still uncontrolled kerbside. Give us the road when you book. End of tenancy in the village
The village has a settled letting market, with John Payne and KFH both on Montpelier Vale letting the flats and houses around the heath. When a tenancy ends, the landlord or outgoing tenant wants a heat-tested oven signed off before the inventory check. On a built-in single that is the £77 job.
