Billericay's workhouse was built on Norsey Road in 1840 and later became St Andrew's Hospital, home to a regional plastic surgery and burns unit until 1998. Most of the hospital site has since been redeveloped as housing, and the listed workhouse buildings were converted into homes.

Single, double or range: telling them apart
- A built-in single is one oven, usually 60cm wide, in a tall housing or under the worktop. About 90 minutes.
- A built-in double has a main oven with a smaller top oven above it, which usually has the grill. About two hours.
- A range cooker stands on its own, 90cm wide or more, usually with two ovens side by side and a hob on top. Two to three hours for the 90cm size.
If you are not sure which you have, measure the width. A range about 100cm wide is priced as the larger size, at £167.
