From heath to town
Bexleyheath was a heath on Watling Street, notorious for highwaymen, until it was enclosed early in the 19th century. Two older buildings are listed Grade II: Wye Lodge on Lion Road, possibly a 17th-century farm building turned into a house, and Christ Church, built in 1872 to 1877 towards the western end of the Broadway. The clock tower went up in the old market place in 1912. The railway arrived in 1895, and once the line was electrified in 1926 house-building took off; by 1938, by one gazetteer's account, all the available land for a mile around had been built on.
Bexleyheath ward, round the town centre, is still mostly houses: at the 2021 Census 52.5% of its 6,310 households (2022 ward boundaries) lived in a semi and 11.2% in a detached house, with 18.3% in a purpose-built flat, and 79.6% owned their home. A semi of the 1920s or 30s whose kitchen has been extended may well have a built-in double.

Parking round the town centre
Bexley's list of controlled roads (checked 4 October 2026) puts much of the centre in the Bexleyheath Town Centre zone, including stretches of both sides of the Broadway, Highland Road, part of Townley Road and Lion Road from No. 77 up to the Broadway. Streets towards the station are in the Bexleyheath Station zone. The council shows each zone's hours on its entry signs, so check the signs in your street; outside those hours the bays are free. My flat is on an upper floor with a lift. Does that change anything?

My new-build oven is pyrolytic. Does it still need a clean?
The self-clean cycle burns grease in the cavity to ash, but the racks and side runners usually come out before it runs, and it does not reach between the panes of the door. The racks are soaked and cleaned separately, and the door is split where its design allows.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
