Bethnal Green North was a ward until 2014
The page name is an old ward name. Tower Hamlets abolished its Bethnal Green North ward in the 2014 boundary changes, and the streets were shared out. The furniture-trade streets off Old Bethnal Green Road
The Winkley estate is now the core of the Old Bethnal Green Road conservation area, designated in October 2008. It was built for the East End furniture trade: cabinet makers, upholsterers and French polishers worked in yards behind three-storey red-brick terraces that open straight onto the pavement, and the council's appraisal calls it the largest group of purpose-built furniture workshops left in Tower Hamlets. Temple Dwellings, two blocks of turn-of-the-century mansion flats, are reached by communal staircases three storeys high.
Post-war council housing surrounds the estate. Keeling House, Denys Lasdun's Grade II* cluster block of 1954-57, is in the conservation area's eastern corner, which is why the boundary reaches Claredale Street. On Mansford Street the 22-storey Charles Dickens House opened in 1969 with 130 flats.
That mix decides how you reach the door: a communal staircase at Temple Dwellings or a flat over a shopfront, and a lift in a tower where there is one. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand in the kitchen.
