Bethnal Green's central green began as common land: in 1678 fifteen and a half acres were bought from the Manor of Stepney, and a trust deed of 1690 barred new building on it.
Paradise Row and the old green
That condition kept the central land open. The museum gardens opened in 1875 and the southern gardens in 1895, and Sir John Soane's church of St John (1826-28, Grade I) stands where Bethnal Green Road, Roman Road and Cambridge Heath Road meet. The conservation area, designated in 1969, is mostly civic buildings and gardens; its main group of homes is Paradise Row, a Grade II listed run of late 18th and early 19th century houses, three storeys throughout, with plain brick fronts and arched doorways, set back behind a wedge of land that was once part of the green.
In three-storey houses of that age the kitchen is often at the back or a floor down from the street door. Mention the floor when you call so the visit is timed for it. It changes nothing else.
Bethnal Green West in the 2021 Census
Paradise Row is in Bethnal Green West ward, called St Peter's until it was renamed in 2022. At the 2021 Census it had 7,413 households: 35.6% rented privately, 40.6% rented from the council or a housing association, and 21.4% owned. Purpose-built flats held 80.3% of households. A further 5.6% lived in some other converted building, such as an old school, church or warehouse, more than in a converted house (4.1%).

Cambridge Heath Road divides zones A3 and A4
On the council's parking zone map, Cambridge Heath Road is the line between two of the Bethnal Green zones. To the west, Paradise Row's side, is zone A3, controlled Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 5.30pm. To the east is zone A4, Monday to Friday only, same hours. Sunday is outside both. The council's zone page also notes that bay controls do not apply on public holidays.
